Formalin Fixation & Wet Specimen Curation

Fixing a specimen can allow biological tissues to be studied in as close to a life-like state as possible. It is typically used in the medical industry for histological & pathological study (healthy vs unhealthy tissues).

Formalin fixing tissues ensures that the specimen will not decompose over time. Great for the up-most curious minds. Services available for educational and personal purposes. Dissection is also an available option for an additional cost.

Bone Preparation (Cleaning, Degreasing, Whitening)

Each specimen is carefully prepared with the use of dermestid beetles. In some cases maceration would be necessary to help clear flesh.

This service is available for both educational and personal purposes.

Leaving grease in will affect the overall health of the bone. Each specimen will then be degreased and then whitened using a select chemical process.

More than 25 states cooperate with DOI, FWS and other federal agencies to mitigate the spread of CWD. Be sure you understand your states pre-cleaning requirements for CWD BEFORE you send us a cervid (e.g.- deer, elk, etc) specimen.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease that affects deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer and moose. It has been found in some areas of North America, including Canada and the United States, Norway and South Korea. It may take over a year before an infected animal develops symptoms, which can include drastic weight loss (wasting), stumbling, listlessness and other neurologic symptoms. CWD can affect animals of all ages and some infected animals may die without ever developing the disease. CWD is fatal to animals and there are no treatments or vaccines.

Skeletal Oxidation - Cleaning/Preservation Method

The oxidation method uses a chemical process to clean flesh off a skeleton. This will keep ligaments and other small tissues in place.

Oxidation is a good preservation method for any private or public party looking for a piece meant to be displayed.

From an educational standpoint, this would be great for Osteology students and practitioners. For private parties, these can make amazing conversation pieces and will appease the curiosity crowd.

We do offer to mount the oxidized specimen to a wooden base for an extra cost.

  • Mousey (Skeletal Oxidation)

I had the honor of preserving Mousey for her family. The method I used is oxidation, which uses a chemical process to clean flesh off a skeleton. This will keep ligaments and other small tissues in place which helps keep the skeleton intact. She had passed away a little while before I had the opportunity to preserve her which extended the process a little bit. The end result is beautiful all the same. She is forever loved and I'm thankful I could provide this service for them!

    (Est. Time: 6-24 weeks)

  • Memorial Piece (Insect Preservation)

I had the pleasure of making this memorial shadow box for another lovely being! Her bosses mother passed away and asked that I make something for her! This is a mixed media memorial piece. All insect preservations include specimens I relax and pin myself.

    (Est. Time: 1-5 weeks)

  • Educational & Personal Wet Specimens (Formalin Fixation)

Fixing a specimen can allow biological tissues to be studied in as close to a life-like state as possible. It is typically used in the medical industry for histological & pathological study (healthy vs unhealthy tissues). Formalin fixing ensures that the specimen will not decompose over time.

Octopi specimens are a personal favorite to work with!

    (Est. Time: 2-12 weeks)

  • Cleaning, Degreasing, Whitening (Bone Preparation)

There are several options for you to choose from if you're interested in bone cleaning services.

First step starts with Dermestid cleaning vs Masceration.

Second step: Ammonia soaking vs Heated water & Dawn soap

    Third step: Hydrogen peroxide

Each choice effects the length of time it could take. If you're looking for these services shoot me a message!

    (Est. Time: 2-8 months)

  • Turner (Insect Preservation)

I was absolutely excited to do this memorial! This is Turner and He is a red-legged Tarantula. They are endemic to Mexico. When preserving tarantulas, you have to clear their abdomen to avoid decomposition. It was such a pleasure meeting his owner and seeing how much he meant to her!

    (Est. Time: 1-5 Weeks)

  • Young Animals (Skeletal Oxidation)

The process of oxidation is much easier with smaller animals. Young animals like kittens and puppies are ideal candidates for the oxidation method. I would love to preserve your baby for you!(Est. Time: 6-24 weeks)
